Location and Staff 

The Indian Education Department is located in the lower floor of the District's Administration Building at 215 South Sixth West. The program is supported by a staff of specially-trained individuals that provides direct services to MCPS teachers and American Indian students. Click here to contact staff.

Title VII Indian Education Parent Committee

This group provides guidance and support to the Indian Education Program. Meetings are open to the public. For more information about the parent committee, contact Kathy Sharbono at 728-2400, ext. 1058.

Events
 

9th Annual 'Honoring Our Youth' Celebration

 

This annual event at Big Sky High School brings together youth and families from throughout the region to celebrate American Indian heritage and honor Indian students through dancing and drumming, arts and crafts, concessions, games and a community potluck. In 2010, the event is scheduled for March 26 and 27. For more information, contact the MCPS Indian Education Department at 728-2400, ext. 1064.

 

 

Indian Education for All

 

Since 2000, Missoula County Public Schools has lead efforts in Montana to implement "Indian Education for All."

 

Americanindianheritageday.jpgThe District is actively committed to developing for all students an understanding of American and Montana Indian people and their histories, as well as fostering respect for their respective cultures. Because of the unique position and place in American history, the American Indian peoples’ role in the development of the United States (with emphasis on the experience of the Montana Tribes) shall be included wherever appropriate in the instruction of MCPS students, in accordance with the state constitution and state standards.

The Indian Sentinel --articles about Native Americans across the United States and their evangelization by the Catholic Church. Most were first-hand accounts by lifelong missionaries in the field that were often illustrated with photographs they had taken. Also featured are articles, essays, and letters by Native Americans, many of whom were students in Catholic schools.
