Submissions Guidelines for Aerie International

The International Literary Arts Magazine in Residence at Big Sky High School in Missoula, Montana

Writing

In the tradition of Montana writers Richard Hugo, James Welch, and Norman Maclean, we are seeking wide-ranging work that represents young people and the places which they call home.

  • We invite honest, innovative, precise poetry of varying subject matter and style. (We rarely print poetry that rhymes.)
  • We welcome short prose, whether fiction or nonfiction, that conveys story and character through image and sensory language and that describes in concise, unfolding scenes rather than interpreting or explaining for the reader. (We are not looking for science fiction, fantasy, horror or romance.)
  • We hope to receive original foreign language poems accompanied by English translations.

How to Send Writing

All writing must be typed and carefully edited and sent in ".doc" document format only. Double-space prose. Poems should be single-spaced. Please number pages. In the top right corner of each page, whether prose or poetry, include:

Student’s full name
Teacher’s full name
Full name of school

With your submission, include a cover letter in the body of your email with the following information in list form:

Student’s full name and home address
Birthdate, present age, and place of birth (student must be 13-19 at time of publication)
Teacher’s full name
Full name and address of school (including country)
Email contacts for teacher and student
Title and genre of attached piece(s)

In your cover letter include a brief biography. Try to offer a bit about your life and where you are from. Consider including something particular about the way you live, even it if seems utterly ordinary. It may not be interesting to you, but it may be fascinating for readers far from where you live.

In a second paragraph you may wish to discuss something about the conception of your piece. It is always interesting to hear about the artists or writers who influenced your work and your aspirations in its creation.

  • Each piece, whether poetry, fiction or nonfiction, should be included as a separate attachment and labeled with the formal title of the piece as given in the cover letter. If we use your piece, we will assume its title is the one you have named the attachment.
  • Also in an attachment, include a personal photo in JPEG format you would be comfortable with us publishing. Feel free to be zany. Do not place your photo in a Word document, as we will not be able to print it.

Email all submissions to aerie.international@gmail.com
We welcome you to contact us with questions.

Visual Art and Photography

In the tradition of Montana artists Rudy Autio and Lee Nye, we welcome digital files of cutting edge visual art and photography, regardless of medium—painting, ceramics, glass, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, weaving, digital and 35mm photography, etc. Art, by its nature, defies categories and pushes boundaries. Defy ours.

We are not interested in copies, however beautifully done, of famous (or not-so-famous) paintings or photographs. We are interested in your original work—your eye, your sensibility, your interpretation, your rendering of a scene or subject.

How to Send Art and Photography

All digital art and photography files must be a minimum 300 dpi JPEG and at least 5 inches horizontally and vertically. Please do not send TIFF, GIF, PFD, PSD or any other format. Send the pieces as individual attachments named with the formal title of the piece of artwork or photography. If we use your piece, we will assume its title is the one you have given the attachment. Due to the size of files, please do not send more than two pieces in one email. You may send up to three emails.

With your submission, include a cover letter with the following information in list form:

Birthdate, present age, and place of birth (student must be 13-19 at time of publication)

Other Submission-y Things to Consider

  • Aerie International publishes once a year, in the spring. Entries must be sent by 1 February each year. Entries arriving after that date will be included with the following year’s submissions, providing the author or artist will still be 13-19 years of age or enrolled in secondary school.

  • All submissions will receive a written response from our editors by email. Most responses will come between March and June. Receipt of submission will only occur if there is a problem.

  • Writers and artists included for publication receive one perfect bound copy of the magazine. Award winners in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, visual art and photography receive $100 U.S. dollars. Additional copies can be purchased for $12 in the United States and $15 outside. All teachers whose students submit work will recieve one complementary copy of the magazine.

  • Pieces of writing of fewer than 1500 words have a greater likelihood of being printed. We reserve the right to do minor editing before publication.

  • Please include no more than 5 pieces/3 emails per individual per year.

  • Aerie International accepts simultaneous submissions. Please inform us immediately if your piece has been accepted for publication elsewhere.

  • Upon acceptance, we ask only one-time rights; all subsequent rights revert immediately to the author. We will send a contract for you, your parents, and your teacher to sign.

  • Teachers please note—NO GROUP ENTRIES. Each student must have an individual email submission with the appropriate cover letter and information. Some teachers have created a form cover letter to help make the process easier for students (and probably teachers) and to ensure the necessary information is included. If submissions are required, please help students choose their best work.

  • Before submitting, consider subscribing to the past Aerie Internationals so you might see the kind of work we publish and what students have written about their work and themselves. We mail within one week of receipt of payment.

  • Please visit us online at www.aerieinternational.com or find the Big Sky High School homepage and look for Aerie International under the Publications link.

We look forward to hearing from you! Our deadline is February 1st, 2012.
*Please read the submissions guidelines carefully. Because of the volume of submissions it is unlikely we will be able to contact individuals if we are unable to open documents or submissions are incomplete.
